According to MLB.com, Atlanta “acquired Bummer from the White Sox in a trade that sent right-hander Michael Soroka, left-hander Jared Schuster, infielders Nicky Lopez and Brandon Schumaker, and right-hander Riley Gowens to the White Sox.”

Bummer, who has been with the White Sox since his big league debut in 2017, is 14-15 with a 3.84 ERA in 289 career games with 85 strikeouts and five saves. This year, he appeared in 61 games and pitched 58 1/3 innings, going 5-5 with a 6.79 ERA and 15 saves. He struck out 78 batters.

After bolstering its back end with Bummer’s addition, Atlanta traded away many of the prospects it had accumulated.

Soroka (2015), Schuster (2020), and Schmidt (2019) were all first-round picks by Atlanta in the First-Year Player Draft.

Soroka broke into the major leagues in 2018 and went 13-4 with a 2.68 ERA the following year. However, an Achilles tendon injury in 2020 limited him to three appearances. He suffered another ankle injury during his rehabilitation, and it took him a long time to get back to full health. When he returned to the majors this year, he went 2-2 with a 6.40 ERA in seven games.

Schuster, who made his big league debut this year, went 4-3 with a 5.81 ERA in 11 games. Schmake, also making his first major league at-bats this season, went 0-for-4 in two games.

The White Sox, who are in the midst of a rebuild under new general manager Chris Getz, who was hired in September, will be looking to build for the 2024 season with a number of new faces.
